Carl Froch Has His Sights On Bigger Fights
Nathan Cleverly, the WBO light heavyweight champion of the world, has revealed that he is not happy with the news that Carl Froch has denied him the chance to square off with him after Froch revealed that he has other opponents within his sight.
Cleverly has been setting the boxing world alight with his recent performances in the ring but it seems that Froch has not been playing the attention of what Cleverly has been doing and admits that he is instead looking for fights against Lucian Bute, the IBF super middleweight champion and well known boxer Mikkel Kessler.
The fight against Froch would have been a big step forward for Cleverly as he looks to increase his reputation both within the UK and now the US after Froch stepped into the limelight across the pond after a number of fights and appearances on US based television.
Should Cleverly be able to attract the attention of Froch, the fight would be considered to be worth a lot of money for both fighters although the bout looks unlikely to go ahead as it would mean that Froch would have to step up a weight class in order to compete against Cleverly.
The IBF super middleweight champion told SkySports that he knew that the fight between the two would be a big attraction for boxing fans as well as being worth good money for both fighters, challenging Froch to step up to answer his call by saying “I know he’d have to step up a weight class, but it would be an opportunity for him to become a two-weight world champion, and it’s not going to be an easy fight for him, so why not do it?”
Although Cleverly seems to think that the fight would be a good move for both parties, questions have been asked whether Froch would consider taking what is thought to be a step backwards after his hard work by accepting a fight with a less well-known fighter but the lure of potentially holding a double weight class title could attract Froch who many regard to be the stronger fighter of the two.
With no movement on the fight as yet, Cleverly will now turn his attention to his title defence against Tommy Karpency towards the backend of next month but many have spoken out with their opinions that the title holder has played it safe and selected a fight with what many would consider a second tier fighter rather than someone that would be able to put Cleverly through his paces.
