Robert Helenius 300x195 Helenius Could Be Stripped Of Title After Surgery

Shoulder injury threatens Robert's career and title

Robert Helenius has been reported to be battling to save his boxing career after undergoing surgery on a shoulder injury that could take over six months to fully recover, meaning that he could be stripped of his European Heavyweight title as he would be unable to fight to defend it.

Although the Finnish boxer has been trying to fight through the pain, it seems that the injury has now progressed to a state that is likely to threaten his career should he rush his recover in order to retain the title, sparking talk that the boxer could be set to hang up his boxing gloves for good.

According to his father  Karl, the injury was known to Helenius up to six weeks before the last time that he stepped into the boxing ring, which was back in December last year when he beat Dereck Chisora in a judge’s decision tie, a fight that the boxer’s father described as “a major cockup”.

Karl Helenius revealed that the reason that his son fought in such a state was down to his trainer, Ulli Wegner, who had pushed the boxer to train and fight Chisora knowing that the injury could affect his chances but the bout was decided in his favour and he retained his championship belt.

While speaking with a Finnish television station, Helenius revealed that the news that his career and title were at threat from the injury was “pretty heavy news”, showing the public a look of pure upset while explaining that he had torn a ligament within his right shoulder prior to the match against Chisora and that taking part in that match up had not helped his career in any way.

The boxer explained that the torn ligament had led to further injuries in which needed to be corrected, such as his collar bone needing to be sorted as well as two further ligaments becoming too loose to do their job within the body.
